The Cuba Missile Crisis was a 13-day confrontation between Soviet Union/Cuba vs. the United States, in October 1962. This conflict has been regarded as the closest the world has ever come to a nuclear war. An American spy plane secretly photographed nuclear missile sites being built by the Soviet Union in Cuba.  President John F. Kennedy decided to place a naval blockade (ring of ships) around Cuba to prevent the Soviets from bringing more military supplies. Leaders of both super powers realized the tragic effects that would take place in case of a nuclear war broke out, so they publicly agreed on a deal in which the Soviets would dismantle the weapon sites in exchange that the United States would not invade Cuba. United States also agreed to remove its nuclear missiles from Turkey, and thankfully the possibly catastrophic possibilities were avoided.
